About Us
Welcome to The Homegrown Apple! We are nestled in a small town in the Sierra Nevada foothills of California. In 2007 my husband and I married. Three years after, we had our daughter Amelia and two years later, our son Warren. It was our dream to some day own a piece of land where we could build a house and call home. In the winter of 2014-15 our dream came true or at least, it began. We purchased 6 acres of bare land and soon discovered it was an old apple orchard, homesteaded over 200 years ago by a man named John Yost. With this discovery, we knew we had something super special and got a little crazy. We decided to run with our gut feeling. We knew we wanted to restore the apple orchard to its original state and build a home, but with this land, we feel we have endless possibilities and the opportunity to raise our children with all the experiences that go along with homesteading a property.
So, why “The Homegrown Apple”? It starts with the idea of someday living off of our land and growing everything we eat. From apples to other fruits and vegetables, to meat and honey; our version of homesteading. But where do we start? How do two young professionals start and maintain our dream to live off the land? We’re not there yet, (or even close for that matter) but this blog is a way for us to document the process and what we learn along the way. Homesteading, gardening, building a house from the ground up, cooking, family and the community we discover along the way are just a few of the topics we will bring to you. We hope you learn something from us as we hope to learn something from you.
