You guys I seriously can’t believe we built this chicken coop. And believe me, I’m glad its over! My husband, Anaiah and I, worked for months on this thing and we are super proud of how it turned out. Not because it’s perfect but because we BUILT it! It took us longer than we thought it would but we took our time and worked together and finally got it done!
So today I’m just sharing some photos of the coop and a little behind the design. First off, this probably seems like a massive coop to you. And it kind of is, bet here’s why. We have planned to raise laying hens (chickens that lay eggs) and meat birds (chickens that are bread to slaughter and eat). We did our research and learned that for a couple reasons, these two sets of chickens should not be kept together. So, we designed this coop with two bays on either side to separate them.
We also wanted to have a dry place to store their feed and scratch and for the kids to collect the eggs. That’s what we build the middle section for. It’s already been super handy. We put an old table in there temporarily and its super convenient for daily chore time. The kids have the cat and dog food in there now too so everything is in one place which makes things easier for them.
When we bought this property years ago, we wanted to start a little homestead and this chicken coop is the beginning of that finally starting to take shape and we couldn’t be happier!
