Oh my goodness! I don’t really know how to start this post. It has been such a roller coaster ride ever since we broke ground on this little home. If you haven’t heard my recent story I’ll make it short and sweet. When we bought the land almost two years ago we started realizing that it would be a really long time until we’d be able to build any sort of “dream home”. Living house poor was never anything either of us was willing to do and we knew building would be pricey. In the end, we decided that living out on the property and giving our kids that sort of life was more important to us than a big house. So, we decided to build a little house that is technically the size of an in-law suite. It’s just under 1200 sq. feet; two bedrooms one bath. Don’t ask me about future plans because they change daily…LOL! Some days we talk about building a bigger home on the property in 5 years or so….other days we think we’ll just add on to this house if we need to in a few years….and our next (more popular idea) is to just stay in this house forever. I think this last idea might just be out of pure exhaustion and just the work involved in building that we don’t ever want to do anything like this again! (for now)
My husband (who is not a contractor) is our general contractor. To be honest I was really nervous when he took on this job and was really against it. I have to give him credit though because he’s done an amazing job! He’s really lined up all the subs pretty perfectly and has been so on top of everything. To me, it’s been just like magic. I ask him what’s happening daily and he always has an answer and the house has flown up so quickly.
We broke ground on the house at the end of March and we hope to be moving in sometime in August!
Just before we broke ground we had to lay a gravel driveway for all the trucks to get around the building site. We’re still working out details about landscaping once the build is finished.
This was the first official day we broke ground!!!
First walls going up.
And all of the sudden, it looked like a house.
The paint and siding made a huge difference!
Here we are today….The exterior is almost complete with the exceptions of lights and our outdoor sink. All light fixtures are being installed today and the cabinets will be painted by the end of the week. So many more little details being worked through in these next few weeks and it’s finally feeling like we could be living there soon! If you have any questions about finish work or really anything at all, please ask in the comments below and I’ll do my best to answer them in posts to follow.
