Kid’s Room Refresh

November 6, 2020

We’ve lived in this little house we built for three years now! It’s gone by so fast and yet it feels like we’ve always lived here, always belonged here. I’ve shared this before but I have an 8 year old son and a 10 year old daughter and they share a room. Ever since they could decide (since they were toddlers) they have wanted to share a room! Our house before this had 3 bedrooms and when they were little I had then sleep in separate rooms. At one point my daughter was having trouble sleeping and wanted her brother to sleep with her and the rest is history. We turned the spare room into a play room and then began our plans for building this home.

At the time we built this house as a mother-in-law house size (under 1200sq ft) with an option to build a larger house on the property someday. We don’t know if that day will ever come now honestly. We have been living in this 2 bedroom 1 bath home for the past three years and might just stay here forever.

Since the kids share this room, I always strive to keep it neutral while still giving it a playful, childish feel. Now that they are older, we’ve switched out a couple things to make it feel more grown up and luxurious for them!

The main change we did was the bedding from Magic Linen! We have all magic linen bedding up in our Airbnb and the kids fell in love with it and have been begging for Magic Linen for months now! Having linen bedding makes anyone feel special and cozy and the kids do not take that for granted. They chose the striped sheet set and blue melange duvet set. They also got completely spoiled with one of their beautiful waffle throws. This big kid bedding made them feel super special and I love getting glimpses of their room every time I walk by it now!

Another little change we made was hanging up their pretty silhouettes from A Family Print Shop! We have always loved these and they sat on top of a shelf that was just collecting dust all these years. Placing them below their sconces and above their beds seemed to label each bed and add their own personal touch to their space or “side of the room”.
We also took down the shelf and added a pretty farm landscape print by bffprintshop and framed by framebridge. It really grounded the room and sent off a grown up vibe which they really enjoy…and so do I! I love teaching my kids about art and learning with them so they are accustomed to seeing old paintings and I think that’s why they were drawn to the muted colors and the homestead scenery.
The last little thing we did was change the paint color of their little nightstand. This was an older piece that was bright white and made to look distressed. I ended up stripping the paint with citrus strip and then sanding it down smooth. I used the paint color Maison Blanche by Sherwin Williams and changed our the big chunky knobs for some smaller wooden ones and I think it gave it just enough of a change to satisfy us.

Here are a couple other links to some things in the room that we didn’t change but that I know you’ll ask about. The beds I don’t have a link for because I found them on eBay and the bed skirts are just Ikea sheets that I put over the box springs. Rug is from Ruggable, copper sconces are from Schoolhouse Electric. The sconce arm and shade were sold separately and I don’t see the copper on their site anymore but I found this one on Etsy that’s similar! Last thing is the United States map made by Gathre which we love!
Also, just wanted to share a couple photos of what the room looked like before. Not a huge change but just enough!

I did research for a while last year to find out w I did research for a while last year to find out which chickens lay these beautiful chocolate brown eggs. I finally discovered that the Marans are the best breed to get. I have Black Marans but they come in a variety including Cuckoo, Silver Cuckoo, Gold Cuckoo, Black Copper, Blue Copper, Splash Copper, Wheaten, Black-Tailed Buff, White, Black, Blue, Splash, Birchen and Columbian.

If you’re thinking of getting chicks this spring and you want some beautiful chocolate brown eggs in the mix I highly recommend! They’re a joy sparker for sure!
I added a little gallery wall over the weekend. I’ve never actually had any wall space to do something like this before in our little house. We just either had doors or windows on all the little walls 😂 And can you see the baseboards! When your husband is doing things himself and already works two busy jobs things just go slower. But we’re saving money and it’s getting done little by little.

I love the artwork I added from the big kids here. Scroll through to see them close up. Warren did the sketch of the fish and Amelia did the embroidered bicycle 🫶🏻
It’s a cold and story first day of February and It’s a cold and story first day of February and this morning the whole property was covered in a dense fog. A nice way to start off the cozy month of February if you ask me!

I’ll just be over here lighting all of my favorite candles in every room. It’s making it smell so good in the house.

These are my favorite candles for ao many reasons!
Nontoxic, 80 hours of burn time, they burn all the way down (they don’t make that hollow cylinder like some candles make down the middle ya know?), lead free cotton wicks, 100% natural soy wax from domestically grown soy beans, premium fragrance oils that won’t give you a headache and aren’t too strong, paraben, paraffin, dye, phthalate and cruelty free.

Just so many reasons to enjoy these candles in your home!

Comment “candles” and I’ll send you a link to them with my discount code!
I found these pretty blue floral plates a while ba I found these pretty blue floral plates a while back and knew exactly where I wanted to hang them. I had never hung a plate before and wanted to do the least damage to my newly painted walls. When I found these hanging discs made in England I bought them right away. I was so excited to try them and they ended up being so easy!

All you do is wet them which activates a glue on the back. Then, adhere them to the back of your plate and let them dry overnight. Once they dry they’re ready to be hung up! If you ever decide you don’t want them hung anymore, just wet the back again and the glue will get released as it softens.

Comment “plate hangers” below and I’ll send you a link to these discs along with a pretty collection of blue plates!
